The Daily Star reports that Santi Cazorla will take over from fellow Spaniard Mikel Arteta as Arsenal captain.
With Arteta having left the club to take up a coaching role at Manchester City, Wenger has been forced to appoint a new club captain for the 2016/17 campaign.
Per Mertesacker has often filled the role on the pitch but with the German out long term with a knee injury, many expected goalkeeper Petr Cech to get the armband. French defender Laurent Koscielny was another candidate but he is not a vocal presence on the field.
Wenger has always preferred an outfield captain and The Star reports he has opted for experienced playmaker Cazorla.
The 31-year-old did wear the armband against Everton in March, 2015 when neither Arteta and Mertesacker were in the squad.
