Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom is thrilled with a “sensational” pre-seaason trip to the USA, having scoring in both of Arsenal’s games Stateside.
Speaking to Arsenal.com, the 20-year-old striker made the most of his opportunities with regular attackers Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil all missing from the American trip. And with Arsene Wenger trawling Europe for a striker to add firepower to his squad, the 20-year-old gave his manager some food for thought with goals in the wins over an MLS All Star selection and Chivas.
“I’m just enjoying it. I have enjoyed every second of the tour, on the pitch and off the pitch. The main thing is gaining fitness and winning the games obviously. I’m buzzing we got two wins in America, now it is back to the UK,” said Akpom.
“We have done a lot of fitness and strength work out here, so we are going back stronger – especially in this heat. The main thing is gaining fitness and I enjoyed it.
I think the lads are clicking on the pitch and off the pitch. I’m buzzing for Rob and Chambo, they scored good goals. There were a lot of positives from this game.”
Akpom spent last season on loan at promoted Hull, but it remains to be seen whether Arsene Wenger releases him again to gain further experience.
For now, he enjoyed his roadtrip and was impressed with the standard of opponents Chivas.
“They were a good team. Technically and physically they were really good. You can’t come to these places and underestimate these teams. The football is really good; it was a tough test.”
